It's a small bulb with a flat bottom that twists into the interior light fitting which is located under the rear view mirror. It's a bit like a dash bulb but the plastic part is flat not long.
VW sell the whole unit mirror, clock, light etc for €372 but it's just the bulb that needs replacing.

Hi, I have a 1973 Volkswagen Super Beetle that I am trying to get on the road. It started up until a couple of days ago, tried jumping it thinking the battery is dead, but it still didn't start up, the lights and everything in the car work, but I read that this might be a common problem with Super Beetles, as it has been wet weather round these parts the last week. Everything looks fine in the engine.
The Solenoid is clicking though, I don't think it's that….
you may have a bad starter motor.. bad solenoid…
OR you may have a flooded piston (used to happen to me all the time till I upgraded to a Weber progressive carb). Aftermarket carbs sometimes stick and gas floods into the #1 piston and makes the engine impossible to turn over. Never park your car pointing up a hill if you have a new carburetor.
Rememdy… Put a big crecent wrench on the crankshaft pulley nut and turn the engine clockwise (whith the transmission out of gear and the handbrake set)… this will pump the gas out through your exhaust… When you start your engine, your exhaust will give a little pop. If you want to take the time, it will be easier to turn the engine if you remove the spark plugs. Put them back in when you've pumped the gas out.
To stop this problem in the future, look for an inline gas valve (available on Ebay).
